Some of you may have seen me if you've been to one of the last two debconf (Oslo and Porto Alegre). In september I'm coming to San Diego to study at UCSD for a year. Unfortunately I don't know the city very well, and so I'm having some difficult organizing my trip. The first thing is that my flight arrives in Los Angeles on the 14th of September at 14:00 PM. How can I reach San Diego from there? (Ok, I know it would have been simplier to take a flight that landend in SD, but it costed a lot more (about 400€) and I couldn't afford it) Have you got any advice? Is there any train, bus, cheap flight, etc? The second thing is that I still haven't any place to stay! :( Unfortunately my application to the International House was rejected and I don't know how to find a place there without beeing able to see it. Can someone suggest me some kind of accomodation which is not too expensive, near the campus and has internet connection? Or any not-too-expensive temporary accomodation from which I can try to find another one in the next few days... Thanks, I'm looking forward to be with you all! :) Guido -- Guido Trotter Jabber ID: ultrotter@jabber.quaqua.net http://people.quaqua.net/ultrotter/ -- Attached file included as plaintext by Ecartis -- -- File: signature.asc -- Desc: Digital signature -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.5 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFBKipNhImxTYgHUpsRAvnpAJ0VPpemPfFgOxt+kplwVq8Q9d3pbwCfeoTU osaSLfqYnMHqzVDtCUtW7s4= =OWHB -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe from this list, e-mail ecartis@scd.debian.net with a subject of `unsubscribe scd'. You can search and purchase tickets at web sites like www.travelocity.com, www.priceline.com, and www.orbitz.com. Southwest is a cheaper airline that doesn't sell through those sites, but I can't get to www.southwest.com right now to check. Allow time to go through customs -- I'd recomend at least two hours. Train service would be from Amtrak, but you need to add the cost/time to get from the airport to the train station. The Long Beach station may be closer to LAX than Union station. Local transport options include MTA (bus/light rail -- I wouldn't want to cary luggage on a local bus), "Limo" services like super shuttle, and taxi. > The second thing is that I still haven't any place to stay! Sorry I don't have any advice there. The travel sites above can be used for Hotels as well though. Is > there any train, bus, cheap flight, etc? If you could ping me a few days before (3-7), I may be able to give you a ride down there. If not, here are some of your options: Bus ~ $15 http://www.greyhound.com/scripts/ticketcenter/terminal.asp?city=892001 Unfornutaley, it looks like downtown LA is the closets station( or nearly closes), and I don't know of any easy way to get there from LAX. Metro Link ~$20 Take MTA Metro Rail from LAX to Norwalk, there transfer to Metro Link to Ocenaside. See: http://www.mta.net/riding_metro/default.htm http://www.metrolinktrains.com/lines/line_orange_county/ for info, planning. Then you could get on the Coaster to UCSD: http://blink.ucsd.edu/Blink/External/Topics/Policy/0,1162,11788,00.html http://www.sdcommute.com/Rider_Information/Trip_Planning/index.asp The sticking point on all of these options is getting from LAX to the pickup. You might also consider an airport shuttle for ~$15 to take you to the stations. > Or any not-too-expensive temporary accomodation from which I can > try to find > another one in the next few days... For this quesry, you may want to take a look at: http://www.hiusa.org/hostels/california/sdiego2.cfm Either would be just a far from UCSD, but the price is not too bad (~$15-20). Then you could have a few days to explore different options. I would suggest going around campus as people sometimes post rooms for rent on bulletein boards. Also see housing office. > Thanks, I'm looking forward to be with you all! :) Make sure when you get settled in you call for a get togther/lets meet.
